How Many Reusable Nappies Do I Need?

If you’ve never used eco cloth nappies before, you might have a lot of questions about how they work. One thing many parents wonder is: How many reusable nappies do I need?

With disposable nappies, you can just buy a new pack whenever you need them. But how many reusable nappies will you need to buy to make sure you never run out?

How Many Reusable Nappies Do I Need?

As a general guide, you should aim to have between 15 and 25 reusable nappies. With this amount, you should be able to do a load of washing every other day, with plenty of time to dry. Then, even if your baby gets through multiple nappies in a day, you should still have plenty to use while keeping on top of your washing and drying.

However, whether you’ll need a lower or higher number of reusable nappies depends on a number of things:

  • Your baby’s age – newborn babies will need more than older babies and toddlers
  • How often you plan on washing your nappies
  • How quickly you can dry the nappies
  • The number of nappies your baby gets through each day

How Many Nappies Will I Need for a Newborn?

Newborn babies tend to get through more nappies than older children. So if you’re planning to start your newborn on reusable cloth nappies, you should start with 25 reusable nappies for your newborn baby.

How Many Nappies Will I Need for Toddlers?

As your baby gets older, unlike newborns, they won’t need so many nappies. So you should aim to have between 12 and 15 reusable nappies for your toddler. This should give your child all the nappies they’ll need, allowing you to do a load of washing every two days – with plenty of time for drying.

Should I Buy Reusable Nappies All At Once?

It’s best not to buy all of your reusable nappies at once. The recommended number of nappies you’ll need are just estimates. Your baby might get through more nappies than others – or less. Plus, the number of reusable nappies you’ll need largely depends on how quickly you can wash and dry the nappies.

If you have a clothes dryer you’ll be able to get your reusable nappies clean and dry for your baby in no time. But if you rely on radiators and washing lines to dry your clothes, then it might take you slightly longer.

Instead, find a starter pack and you can add to over time. You can buy a reusable nappy starter pack from the Conscious Parent store. Our reusable nappy starter packs contain a range of colours and style, with boosters and biodegradable nappy liners. One of these packs should let you know how many reusable nappies you’ll need for your baby, based on how often they need changing, and how quickly you can wash and dry them.

And once you know how many reusable nappies you’ll need for your child, you can buy a reusable nappy bundle that’s right for you.

How Many Nappy Boosters Do I Need?

Boosters make reusable nappies extra absorbent. Your child will need to wear more absorbent nappies at night. Plus, some babies just get through more nappies than others. And all babies have those days where they just seem to get through nappy after nappy after nappy.

You should aim to have one booster for every two reusable nappies. You can reuse boosters a few times, and they tend to dry very quickly. So you might not need as many boosters as you think.

One last thing – you’ll need biodegradable nappy liners. We sell these in handy rolls of 100. So even if your baby gets through a lot of nappies, one roll should last you a while.
